Story
www.apartofawhole.com
My grandparents died when I was in my early teen years. My grandmother passed from Alzheimer's and my grandfather from Parkinson's induced dementia. They missed a lot of important things in my life. Many times I have longed to sit down with them and talk about things while playing a game of cards--a favorite pastime of theirs. I often wonder what they would think about the life I lead now.
As I've gotten older, I have learned more about dementia and the importance of taking action. I am running 50 kilometers in the Blue Mountains. I run for my grandparents. I run to protect my future self, and I run for those who cannot. I run with the hope of a brighter tomorrow--for a tomorrow in which I can rest a little easier knowing my parents will get the fighting chance they deserve should dementia ever lay claim to them. I run so that I may bring awareness to the fact that dementia is so much more than just memory loss associated with aging. I run for families everywhere which have every watched a loved one suffer from dementia. I run to make a difference.
